What is a coating?
Simply put: a coating is a compound material that is applied to a surface or an object. These surfaces or objects are usually referred to as ‘substrate’.
A more in-depth definition would be that a coating is a chemical-based compound paint. A compound is any thing that is made up of two or more materials. Coatings are most commonly made up of epoxyethane or polyurethane. It is important to note that coating applications might require a different compound material.
Creation
As you know by now, a coating is made up of multiple different materials. These materials are combined and thereafter continuously mixed together using a mixing spiral at a low RPM. It is important that the mixer doesn’t spin too quickly as air might get trapped inside the chemical mixture.
Once the coating is mixed it has to be applied almost immediately. This is because the coating can only be applied within a short period of time after mixing the chemicals before the effect of the coating wears off. Where this normally would only take half an hour, it can strongly vary depending on different variables like humidity and air temperature.
Product applications
In general, most people assume coatings are just for protecting a painted wall. Take your kitchen for example. That is however far from the truth. There are a wide variety of coating applications. The purpose of a coating may be decorative (i.e. color), functional or both.
Having said that, the true function of a coating is to change the properties of the substrate surface.
